Dutch company Umincorp, an expert in sustainable plastic recycling, has been declared bankrupt. For this reason, the remaining separation, sorting and recycling lines, other machinery, tools, accessories and plant inventory of both factories is being auctioned online at Troostwijk Auctions. The two auctions are currently open. Bidding is possible at the Umincorp Polymer Plant in Rotterdam until Tuesday 3 September 2024 and at Plastic Recycling Amsterdam until Wednesday 4 September 2024.
The Urban Mining Corp Operations BV, or Umincorp for short, extracted plastic from the domestic waste of the four major cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, among others, and turned it into small granules. These were used by producers as a raw material for plastic. Despite the fact that Umincorp seemed a promising and important company for the circular and sustainable economy in the Netherlands, the company was declared bankrupt this year.
Cheap fossil plastics and stricter regulations
Umincorp could not compete with the very low market prices of new plastic from fossil raw materials, which made it more attractive than recycled plastic. In addition, the company faced stricter European rules for recycled plastic.
Umincorp wanted to get most of its revenue from recycling PET (known from PET bottles) from the waste of big cities. With an innovative recycling technique, the magnetic particle separator, which had been worked on for years, it was able to take apart very pure plastics. With this, the company until recently made food packaging, including for the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands; Albert Heijn. But due to new European rules that required plastics from non-separated waste to never (even if cleaned) be suitable for food packaging, this was no longer possible. This marked the end for Umincorp.
Separation, sorting and recycling machines
Due to the plant closure, the remaining separation, sorting and recycling lines, other machinery, tools, accessories and plant inventory of Umincorp Polymerfabriek in Rotterdam and Plastic Recycling Amsterdam are being auctioned online at Troostwijk Auctions. This offers recycling companies around the world a great opportunity to expand their machinery fleet at a favourable price.
