Installations of plastic recycler Fuenix Ecogy auctioned after bankruptcy

Weert, 31 March – The installations of the bankrupt recycling company Fuenix Ecogy, based in Weert (the Netherlands), are being offered through an online auction. The company, known as a pioneer in the chemical recycling of plastic waste and a partner of chemicals group Dow, went bankrupt in 2025. The sale highlights the increasing pressure on the European recycling sector.

Growing pressure on the recycling sector

Fuenix Ecogy is not an isolated case. Earlier, the installations of plastic recycler Umincorp were also sold via an online auction. This points to a broader trend: despite growing attention for circularity and stricter sustainability targets, many recycling companies struggle to scale their operations profitably.

High energy and investment costs, combined with a market in which recycled materials often struggle to compete with new (virgin) materials, continue to put structural pressure on the sector.

Pioneer in chemical recycling

Fuenix Ecogy produced biofuels and sustainable raw materials by converting plastic waste into new resources. The company was internationally recognised as one of the frontrunners in chemical recycling.

The bankruptcy was declared in July 2025 at the request of a creditor, despite support from investors and a partnership with chemicals group Dow.

Online auction of installations

The inventory and installations of Fuenix Ecogy are now being offered via an online auction by Troostwijk Auctions. The assets include specialised equipment used for processing and upgrading plastic waste streams.

The auction is expected to attract international interest from companies active in recycling and circular raw materials, with installations often finding a second life in markets where the business case is more favourable.
